Family Pictures Fall 2013

We took our fall family pictures on a hot and windy day but were really happy with how they turned out! The backdrops are the side of the Blue Mountain Lodge restaurant and pond by the Prairie Winds Event Center. All photographs are by Hayley from Southern Belle Portraiture. She was great, even when Ryan was being less than cooperative (which is why we don't have any of the boys together). Enjoy!

Cohen: 10 Months Old

At 10 months, Cohen is a very fast crawler and is pulling himself up on furniture. He now as 7 teeth (the top 4 and a 3rd bottom one all came in at the same time) and is enjoying finger foods more, especially Cheerios and canned green beans. Some of his other favorite foods are bananas, plain yogurt, blueberries, peas, black beans, applesauce, and chicken. We've discovered he does not like cottage cheese or pumpkin, but otherwise he's not too picky.  He's drinking all formula now and has even started using a soft-top sippy cup.

He has an easy laugh and is ticklish on this feet, legs, and tummy. He also loves when you hide around the corner and jump out at him.

Besides laughing, most of his sounds are either babble or lion roars. He can sometimes roar on cue and will also roar at little animals if he's playing with them or randomly in the carseat. He hasn't made any distinguishable "mama" or "dada" in reference to us yet, but it seems like it will be soon.

Cohen likes to clap and will clap and dance when music comes on. He can also do "So Big" and wave bye-bye or hello. He loves when we do patty-cake, especially the rolling part.

Other favorite things are watching Ryan, having someone chase him down the hall, trying to get into Nika's dogfood or the piano cabinet, pulling himself up to play piano, and sitting on a cardboard box that holds his Color-pillar toys.

He is getting better at sleeping through the night, waking up to cry a few times, but usually either going back down himself or with just a little soothing by rubbing his back. He doesn't often fall alseep in my arms anymore, but it's pretty fun to cuddle when he does.

Cohen seems to have grown up so fast recently going from sitting and being spoon-fed to crawling/pulling up and feeding himself. We love watching him learn and grow each day!

Fire Station and Flu Shots

We went to the firestation for supper only to find out that the fire trucks had been called out right before we got there. We actually passed them on our way as they stood flashing in front of Colenbrander Hall for what looked like more of a minor cooking problem than a big emergency. Luckily, they got back to the station before we left so Ryan could check them out.

After supper, we asked tricked Ryan if he wanted to go see the birds and fish at the Doctor's office. He always asks to go see them when we go for walks by the office and was excited to learn they were "open" that night.  It was only when he walked around the aquarium and saw Adam with his shirt sleeve up did he realize that our real mission was the family flu shot clinic.  Ryan coached Cohen through the shot telling him to be brave and that it wouldn't hurt, but when it was time for his own, he started thrashing and wailing. It was over quickly and a sticker and sucker took his mind off it, but it was pretty funny to hear him describe later how "brave" he was.

Ryan: 4 Years Old

Ryan is a bright, curious, talkative, and energetic 4-year-old. It's almost crazy to think about the differences from a year ago. In the past year, he has become potty trained, learned to dress, bathe, brush his teeth and use the bathroom by himself, moved to a new bedroom in the basement, became a terrific big brother, started preschool and has learned so many more new things.

Ryan has a large vocabulary and uses all of it. Often. His Sunday School teachers commented that he is a great storyteller and he is good at retelling all the details about an event, book, or TV show. He uses a lot of facial expressions and gestures.

Ryan is a great big brother and loves playing with Cohen, feeding him, wrestling with him, and making him laugh. He enjoys playing with friends of all ages at daycare, preschool, church, football games, and in the neighborhood. He is lucky to have terrific grandparents nearby, 4 great-grandparents, aunts and uncles who love him, and 3 awesome cousins. He also has a special bond with my cousins who live in town and we are very thankful for them!

Ryan shows some first-born tendencies in how he wants things done "right," like wanting to see a picture of whatever character he's coloring to make sure he puts all the "right colors in the right places." He insists on doing many things himself like brushing his teeth, buttoning buttons, and carrying his backpack. He also gets into habits and routines, such as how we say goodbye in the morning ("kiss, kiss, hug" then wave from the window), sleeping habits (3 books, rub back, CD on repeat, light on in hallway, door open, all the stuffed animals on the bed ), morning routine (get dressed in the living room, then eat string cheese, apples or peanut butter on bread while watching Curious George...and sometimes Jake if there's time). He likes to know what is going to be happening each day this week, but seems to adjust fine to different activities at night.

He loves playing outside, going to the park, driving his remote control car, coloring with crayons and markers, playing with race cars and his pirate ship,  playing ipad (especially Minion Rush), playing games on pbskids.org, reading books, visiting the farm and doing lots of "boy" things with Daddy. He asks lots of questions about God, heaven, the world, animals and the weather and we know he'll repeat whatever we tell him, so we have to be careful how we answer!

Ryan is growing up into such a fun kid and we are so proud of who he is becoming!

Pumpkin Land

We took Ryan to PumpkinLand on his birthday. The boys loved looking at the animals, especially holding the sleepy kitten. Ryan liked feading hay to the goats and Cohen baa'd back at the sheep! They also picked out some small decorative pumpkins for the house.

Ryan wore his birthday crown the whole evening and I think he had a great birthday night!

Ryan's Birthday Celebration...continued

Since his party was long over (he was already talking about his 5-year-old party), I thought Ryan's actual birthday might be a little anti-climactic. Adam was scheduled to be gone the whole evening of his birthday, so we made a trip to de zoete winkel (fro-yo shop) the night before. A special surprise was getting to play "Happy  Birthday" on the jukebox.

Walking back to our house, Cohen and Ryan played their favorite game: Ryan runs ahead of the stroller, then suddenly turns around and lets the stroller run into him. It makes Cohen laugh so hard!

On Birthday morning, we started with chocolate chip muffins served on "the red plate,"and a few cards he hadn't opened yet.  He brought treats to his pre-school class and was more than proud of his birthday crown.

(Don't worry, Blair, it's your turn next week!)

I think Ryan really enjoyed his birthday this year and is looking forward to Emily's party coming up!
